What is Obesity Surgery?
Obesity surgery (bariatric surgery) refers to surgical procedures performed to help overweight individuals lose weight and improve obesity-related health conditions. These surgical methods provide an effective solution when traditional weight loss approaches such as diet and exercise fail.
Who is Obesity Surgery Suitable For?
- Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m² or higher
- Those with a BMI between 35-40 kg/m² who also suffer from health conditions related to obesity such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea
- Individuals who cannot achieve long-term weight loss with diet and exercise methods
- Individuals aged 18-65 without any medical contraindications for surgery
Health Benefits of Obesity Surgery
Improvement in Type 2 Diabetes
More than 80% of patients experience improvement in diabetes symptoms and reduced use of medication.
Blood Pressure Control
Most patients with hypertension return to normal blood pressure levels and reduce their medication usage.
Improved Cholesterol Levels
Patients experience a decrease in bad cholesterol levels and an increase in good cholesterol levels.
Sleep Apnea Treatment
The majority of patients with sleep apnea show significant improvement in their symptoms.
Improved Quality of Life
Increased mobility, improved self-confidence, and significant improvements in life satisfaction are observed.
Reduced Joint Pain
Joint pain in areas such as knees, hips, and back decreases, mobility improves, and the risk of joint-related diseases is reduced.
Obesity Surgery Methods
Modern and effective obesity surgery techniques performed in our clinic
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical procedure in which approximately 80% of the stomach is removed to create a tube-shaped, smaller stomach:
- Reduces stomach volume to create fullness with smaller portions
- Decreases the hunger hormone (ghrelin) to support appetite control
- Performed via minimally invasive (laparoscopic) technique with minimal scarring
- Surgery time is about 1–1.5 hours; hospital stay is typically 2–3 days
Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most commonly preferred bariatric procedures. Since the intestines are not rerouted, vitamin–mineral malabsorption issues are generally less than with other methods.
Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass is a procedure that combines restriction and reduced absorption by connecting a small stomach pouch directly to the intestines:
- A small stomach pouch is created and connected to the mid–small intestine
- Enables faster and greater weight loss
- Particularly effective for type 2 diabetes
- Performed laparoscopically; surgery time is around 2–3 hours
Gastric bypass is a well-established method with proven effectiveness. Postoperative vitamin and mineral supplementation is required. It is often preferred for patients with very high BMI and coexisting diabetes.
Mini Gastric Bypass
One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass
Mini gastric bypass is a simplified version of the standard gastric bypass, performed with a single connection (anastomosis):
- Shorter operative time with a lower complication risk
- Weight-loss effectiveness comparable to standard gastric bypass
- Delivers effective outcomes in diabetes and metabolic conditions
- Can be reversed more easily if needed
Although technically simpler, mini gastric bypass provides effective weight loss. It should generally be avoided in patients with significant reflux complaints.
Adjustable Gastric Band
Gastric Band
The adjustable gastric band is a silicone band placed around the upper part of the stomach to limit its capacity:
- A reversible and adjustable method
- Less invasive with a shorter surgery time (30–45 minutes)
- Leads to slower and less overall weight loss
- Requires regular follow-ups and band adjustments
Today, gastric banding is less commonly preferred than other methods. It may be an option for patients with a comparatively lower BMI (35–40) seeking to minimize surgical risk.
Obesity Surgery Treatment Process
Our comprehensive care approach from pre-op to post-op
Initial Evaluation and Consultation
At the first appointment with the bariatric surgeon, your medical history, weight challenges, and treatment expectations are assessed. The most appropriate surgical method is determined for you.
- Comprehensive medical history review
- Physical examination and baseline measurements
- Discussion of surgical options
Preoperative Assessment
Comprehensive tests and multidisciplinary evaluations are performed. The preoperative preparation process begins.
- Comprehensive blood tests and imaging
- Cardiology, endocrinology, and psychology consultations
- Nutrition counseling and preoperative diet
Surgical Procedure
The planned surgical method is performed. The operation is usually carried out laparoscopically (minimally invasive) and lasts 1–3 hours depending on the technique.
- Laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia
- Small scars with minimal incisions
- 2–4 days of inpatient monitoring
Early Recovery Phase
During the first few weeks after surgery, a specific nutrition plan is followed and wound healing is monitored.
- Begin with a liquid diet and gradually transition to solid foods
- Regular check-ups and nutrition counseling
- Initiation of light physical activity
Long-Term Follow-Up
After surgery, you are followed regularly for at least 2 years. Eating habits, physical activity, and overall health are monitored.
- Regular follow-ups (more frequent in the first year)
- Vitamin–mineral supplementation and blood tests
- Ongoing nutrition and exercise program support
- Psychological support when needed

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you wonder about bariatric surgery
Weight loss varies depending on the surgical method, your starting weight, age, sex, and your post-operative nutrition habits. In general, it is possible to lose about 60–80% of your excess weight. After sleeve gastrectomy, an average loss of 30–40 kg is seen; after gastric bypass, 40–60 kg. Most weight loss occurs within the first 12–18 months.
As with any surgical procedure, bariatric surgery has risks. These include bleeding, infection, anesthesia-related complications, blood clots, respiratory problems, leaks, and long-term vitamin–mineral deficiencies. However, with an experienced team and proper patient selection, these risks can be minimized. In our clinic, complication rates are below international standards.
Today, bariatric surgery is usually performed laparoscopically (minimally invasive). With this technique, 5–6 small incisions of about 0.5–1 cm are made on the abdomen. These fade over time and in most patients do not leave noticeable scars. Open surgery is rarely required; in that case, a larger scar may remain.
Post-operative nutrition progresses in stages: the first 2 weeks are liquids; the next 2 weeks puréed foods; from week 5 soft foods; and after weeks 6–8 a gradual transition to a normal diet. Long-term, a protein-focused, lower-carbohydrate diet rich in vitamins and minerals is recommended. Our dietitian will create a personalized plan for you and follow you up regularly.
After rapid and significant weight loss, skin laxity may occur. This depends on factors such as age, genetics, skin elasticity, and the rate and amount of weight loss. Regular exercise, skin care, and adequate hydration can help reduce sagging. If laxity persists, body-contouring procedures (abdominoplasty, arm lift, thigh lift, etc.) can be performed once weight loss stabilizes (typically after 12–18 months).
Bariatric surgery is an effective tool for long-term weight control, but it is not a miracle. If you do not follow the recommended nutrition plan, stay physically active, and attend follow-ups, you may regain weight. About 15–20% of patients regain some of the lost weight within 5 years. Therefore, lifestyle change and regular follow-up are essential. Our team supports you for long-term success after surgery.
